Breeding Program

Breed of Dog: German Shepherd Dog

A superior breeding program is essential for an organization such as Minnesota K9 Solutions.

The use of Selective Breeding, (SMART® breeding (SMART=Selection with Markers and Advanced Reproductive Technologies) or Precision breeding), within the German Shepherd breed is going to be more successful because of the breeding stock’s progeny history (bloodline), of protection and or disability service work, and their willingness to do repetitive and demanding tasks.

By building on combinations of prey, pack and defense drives, it takes less time and expenses to produce quality dogs of proven reliability. In regards to our service working dogs for the disabled, we believe that because of the German Shepherd’s history of service work, which far surpasses all other breeds.

Our dogs are best suited for disability assistance work. Given the high rate of unreliability with dogs that are donated or adopted from rescue shelters, and used by non-profit organizations to be placed with disabled clients, many of the dogs in those circumstances are unfortunately extremely limited in their workability, or flat out rejected after a considerable amount of time and resources have been spent on the dog.

The German working bloodline lineages in which we import and breed, far surpass any other breed in regards to workability and dependability. Minnesota K-9 Solutions breeds and trains all of their dogs here in Minnesota.

♥Puppy Raising – Minnesota K-9 Solutions recognizes the value of volunteers, however, in our experience, non-profit organizations that use volunteers with limited knowledge and experience to raise and train puppies for prospective future assistance dogs, may be contributing unknowingly to one of the most crucial errors involved with training animals. The essential element of a Canine and Primary Pack-Leader Bond is lost, as well as the Continuity in Training.

When organizations use alternating volunteer puppy raisers and trainers. This process exposes the puppy or dog to different and confusing stimuli. Significant behavioral issues often arise concerning obedience, which can be detrimental to the goal of attaining a mature, well-adjusted, reliable service dog. Many dogs bred or trained under those parameters become un-willing to continue to obey commands, as well as "disconnect" with their adopted owner.  

♥Advanced Training – We train our dogs from birth; daily in general obedience and service related tasks. Then, after approximately six months, the dog is trained in areas that are more specialized.

Health and temperament testing are completed from birth and on an on-going basis. This process helps evaluate the dogs systematically, while determining if they will be able to handle the work in which the dog is being geared for.

♥Team Training – Our clients train with the dog that has been specifically matched for them. Training periods typically vary as a result of the individual goals established at the time of the program enrollment. Because of the variety of needs and conditions, training periods can vary significantly.

There are no cookie cutter solutions at Minnesota K-9 Solutions. They are required to pass daily written exams with a 95% score. Accuracy of knowledge, which includes demonstrating to the instructors their ability to handle a service dog in the community, is of paramount importance.

♥Follow Ups – Ongoing support to insure success of the client/dog team is provided for the duration of the dog’s service tenure. Certification is required annually for the first and second year and there after every other year. Minnesota K-9 Solutions stays in contact with every client/dog team placed.
